For the past 50 years, The Courier and businesses of the area have made a habit of waiting for such arrivals of Corning’s First Baby of the Year. Beginning Friday, January 1 the Courier launched this year’s First Baby contest in which the value of a $500 savings bond is issued to the family from Corning having the first baby of the year.
Rules have remained the same over the past five decades. (1) The baby must be born to parents who reside within the Corning zipcode of 72422; (2) the mother and father of the child must be married to other. (3) A written statement from the attending physician must be brought to the Courier office within 24 hours of the birth. After 12 hours, and confirmation, thewinner will be declared. Parents have options regarding their prize. An equivalent to the amount to purchase the bond or open an account will be provided.
The gift to the “First Baby” is made possible by 27 sponsoring businesses in the Corning area.
The First Baby of the Year Contest began in 1965. The “First Baby” winner was Mark Anthony Livingston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Livingston, born January 19 in Cash-Page Clinic in downtown Corning.
