Dates are being set, plans are falling into place and new ideas are being discussed for this year’s Relay for Life Rally at Corning’s Wynn Park as organizers expect to make the 2013 event even larger than the two previous years.
Chair Amanda Wiedeman confirms Friday, June 7 is the date to circle on the calendar as they kick-off activities at 6:00 p.m.
Just like our first Relay for Life Rally two years ago, we will return to a six-hour event and stop at 12:00 midnight. We expect a lot of participation throughout the evening and night as we set a higher goal than we hit last year.
Thursday, April 11, a meeting will be held in the Walmart Room of M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center, beginning at 5:00 p.m. where plans will be discussed and more dates set for pre-Relay activities.
A schedule of events for the night of June 7 will be finalized in May.
Christine Hollis continues efforts in helping organize events. She said there have been already been bake sales, basketball shoot-outs, and portrait offers made available and more.
A “Road Block” at the intersection of Highways 62-67 is still in the “talking stage” when all teams are invited to join the effort of informing and collecting donations.
“Tina White will be in charge of luminaries that will line the track at Wynn Park. Relay for Life teams will be contacting people and providing information to their team captain or to Tina to purchase luminaries at $5.00 each,” Wiedeman adds. “Last year there were many luminaries in honor and/or in memory of cancer survivors and victims.”
Shelby Burkheart will continue to head the planning for a “Survivors’ Dinner” on Saturday, May 18 in House of Prayer’s Family Life Center.
“We encourage survivors and their guest to save that date and help us celebrate the fact they have won the battle against cancer,” Wiedeman adds. “Shelby can be contacted at 870-215-3590.”
As usual, Corning’s Relay for Life will begin with the “Survivor’s Walk” around the Wynn Park track. Persons planning to be part of this opening event will be wearing “Survivor T-shirts” and may register with their team captain or Shelby Burkheart to make sure T-shirts arrive on time.
The meeting Thursday, April 11 is open to individuals who wish to assist in making this year’s Relay for Life Rally a total success.
